Extension of temporary protection for Ukrainians in Portugal
In 2024, Portugal actively accepts Ukrainian refugees and provides them with social support. According to Eurostat, more than 60 thousand Ukrainians have already found refuge in the country, mainly in municipalities such as Lisbon, Cascais, Porto, Sintra and Albufeira.
Temporary protection in Portugal for displaced persons from Ukraine has been extended until December 31, 2024. According to the resolution of the Portuguese government, temporary protection for Ukrainians is extended automatically, which does not require additional bureaucratic actions.
The Embassy of Ukraine recommends that Ukrainian citizens with temporary protection status in Portugal carry this resolution of the Portuguese authorities along with certificates of residence permit. This will help to avoid possible problems when crossing the border and during your stay in the country.

Rules of entry to Portugal for Ukrainians in 2024
As of April 2024, Ukrainians in need of temporary protection can enter Portugal with identity documents. Ukrainian citizens do not need a visa to enter Portugal if they have a valid biometric passport. Under the visa-free regime, you can stay in the country for 90 days.
For a longer stay and receiving social assistance, it is necessary to issue a temporary protection status. This status gives the right to stay in Portugal for 1 year with the possibility of extension in the future, according to the decision of the Portuguese government.

Procedure for obtaining temporary protection in Portugal
In 2024, Portugal is considering applications from Ukrainian citizens for temporary protection under a simplified procedure. To receive protection, you need to register with the Agency for Integration, Migration and Asylum (AIMA):
- Register online on the website (there are special departments that work only for applications concerning children in Portugal without parents, for example, accompanied by other family members).
- Please provide information about yourself, your place of residence in Portugal and contact details. The absence of a foreign passport is not a reason for refusal to provide international protection, your Ukrainian documents are not withdrawn.
- AIMA transmits your registration data to the tax service, social security service and medical service. Registration in these services will be performed automatically, and the certificate will be sent to your email.
After registration, you will receive:
- NIF (tax number)
- NISS (social service number)
- Número de Utente (medical number)
